Mysterious Cargo

Episode 14: Drive/ Birdemic

The Lowdown: Robert Summers, Russell Summers, and Justin Wilhelm continue their coverage of the greatest crisis threatening America today: Netflix. Plus, a brief discussion of the SCARFACE remake and a proposed N.W.A. biopic.

Justin Gets Around to It: Justin gets around to watching an 80’s cult classic:(okay…maybe not classic…but you know what we mean)  the literally and figuratively immortal HIGHLANDER. The panel debates essential and nonessential bad movies as well as what it’s like to finally see a pop culture touchstone you should have seen when you were a kid.

Now Playing: The panel looks at Nicholas Winding Refn’s existential getaway driver thriller DRIVE.

3 to 1: We give some of our pop culture recommendations and review something recommended to us: the must-be-seen-to-be-believed environmental horror, salesman dates a supermodel, exploding flock of birds midnight movie BIRDEMIC (thanks, Jack).

Episode 13: Red State/ Attack The Block

The Lowdown: Robert Summers, Justin Wilhelm, and Russell Summers return to smother podcast french fries in the ketchup of pop culture. This week, Facebook isn’t satisfied with stealing just your privacy and time. They wanna sell you some movies. We examine Facebook’s attempts to “friend request” film distribution. Then, Netflix loses Starz for good this time. Now what? Also, someone wants to mess with the Ex-Presidents. A POINT BLANK remake anyone? And HIGHLANDER really is immortal. The latest push to restart the franchise.

Now Playing: Indie film Demi-God and Twitter-er Extraordinare, Kevin Smith (@ThatKevinSmith) has been the center of controversy and news for the distribution and hype surrounding his latest film: the politico-horror flick RED STATE. We review the actual movie.

3 to 1: The panel makes some of their own pop culture recommendations. And we discuss something recommended to us. This episode, it’s much buzzed about British creature feature ATTACK THE BLOCK (Thank again, Alan).

Soon…

Mysterious Cargo has been on a bit of unscheduled hiatus. We apologize. And are hard at work looking for ways to pin the whole thing on Justin Wilhelm. In the mean time, hang on. New episodes should be coming soon. Tumblr, Facebook, and Twitter should be updated periodically.

COBRA on Blu-Ray

That’s right, Mysterious Cargoers! The Tough Cop with the girl’s name, Marion Cobretti is back on the streets in glorious Blu-Ray! If Good Movies are a Disease, He’s the Cure! Sylvester Stallone wrote this and reteamed with his RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD 2 director George P. Cosmatos to what Sly surely thought would be his next big action franchise. Fate and the box-office had some other ideas. However, this is a fun watch filled with a pulsing 80’s soundtrack, a barely explained serial killer cult rampaging through Los Angeles, and some of the most straight face delivered one liners in action movie history. A film we will literally sit through all the way til the end when it shows up on cable late at night. Cobra is a Reagan era hero who blatantly could care equally less about civil rights or whether it’s safe to drive with your mirror shades on at night. Just throwing it out there. Worth seeing for the opening set piece alone. If Stallone will revive this character the way he brought back Rocky and Rambo, we will be the first ones in line to buy a ticket. Until then…

We Ride Together. We Podcast Together. Bad Boys For Life!

Our good buddy and fellow podcast upstart Doug Connolly mentioned us on episode 107.5 of his show “Where I’m Not”. We greatly appreciate the support and the compliment. Doug and his partner John Ramsey are the hosts of this very laid back, thoughtful and dryly humorous podcast. Every week they discuss personal subjects that make them wish they were elsewhere. Both of these dudes come from a stand up comedy background so it’s always fun to see where their insightful and often spiritual discussions take them. Well worth a download. You can find their blog here. And “Where I’m Not” is available on iTunes.

The 15 Most Stylish Comic Book Heroes

Although you might not think so, the Mysterious Cargo dudes love talking fashion and style as well. Our good friend Amelia Hindmarch, commercial & video stylist/model/not-so-secret geek, who writes the Stylemarch blog suggested a very nifty link to this article at Swipelife which is the perfect intersection of fashion and pop culture: “The 15 most Stylish Comic Book Heroes”.

We can honestly say the author knows their stuff. Some smart picks and great pictures. Worth a look.

If you think about it…Tom Ford could totally be Batman. We’ve never seen them in the same place at the same time. Besides, is there anything Tom Ford can’t do?

Episode 11: Cowboys & Aliens/ Blue Valentine

The Lowdown: Robert Summers, Russell Summers, and Justin freaking Wilhelm destroy Pop Culture in order to save it. This episode we discuss recent MAN OF STEEL news like the first look at Henry Cavill in full on blue tights and Laurence Fishburne’s (Larry to us) casting as Daily Planet boss Perry White. Then it’s on to the comic world where there’s a new Spidey in town. We talk about Brian Bendis’s new African American/Latino Spiderman Miles Morales inspired in part by COMMUNITY’s Donald Glover’s Twitter campaign to be cast as the Web Slinger. Then when things can’t get dorky enough we look at the Diablo video game’s integration of a gaming auction house into it’s newest version. Justin explains it. Just listen. And finally, even John McClane himself can’t stop the next DIE HARD movie. The panel examines the quest for a new director.

Now Playing: Daniel Craig is so money and he doesn’t even know it. IRON MAN director and former Swinger Jon Favreau helms the new sci-fi western COWBOYS & ALIENS starring James Bond and Indiana Jones. If you squint, we think Vince Vaughn is playing the aliens.

3 to 1: More recommendations from the panel. There will be a quiz later. Then we brace ourselves for something recommended to us, the funniest, most quotable comedy since ANCHORMAN, Derek Cianfrance’s time-jumping break-up flick BLUE VALENTINE starring Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams (Thanks Rosina & Kyle)
